Stagnation pressure probes such as the pitot tube according to Prandtl or the cylinder probe measure velocity based on measuring the dynamic pressure.

In terms of their design, stagnation pressure probes are straight (cylinder probe VDEH) or L-shaped (pitot tube according to Prandtl) tubes that are open at one end. Channels that are linked to the environment via bores are located in the interior of this tube. The channels are connected to suitable measuring instruments such as, e.g., U-tube pressure gauges via the tube carrier. Stagnation pressure probes are used wherever simple and precise flow measurement is needed.
